Care for a new houseplant

When you get it home, remove any wrapper around the plant, place it on a saucer and give it a drink of water.

When choosing where to display your plant, bear in mind that most houseplants grow best in bright places, not in direct sunlight. While cacti and succulents like sunny windowsills. Check the "Needs" page to see whether your plant prefers sunny or shady positions.

Houseplants need both water and plant food to thrive. Seek advice from your retailer regarding the best product(s) to use. Follow the product's instructions when applying plant food.

With flowering houseplants, cut off any fading flowers to encourage fresh ones.

Care for a new outdoor plant

When you get it home, remove any wrapper around the plant, put it outside and water the plant (still in its pot) thoroughly.

Ideally, leave it a few days to acclimatise to changes in light and temperature from where it was purchased, then plant it in the ground.

When choosing where to plant your plant, bear in mind that most outdoor plants grow best in sunny spots, or where they get the sun for part of the day. Though some plants, like ferns, thrive in shade. Check the "Needs" page using the tab above to see whether your plant prefers a sunny or shady position.

Make the hole for the plant larger that the pot it is in and the same depth.
When removing the plant from the pot, squeeze the sides of the pot to loosen it.
Loosen the roots of the plant, put the plant in the hole spreading the roots to encourage them to grow outwards.
Fill round the edges of the rootball with soil to the same level as the surrounding soil.

Outdoor plants need both water and plant food to thrive. Seek advice from your retailer regarding the best product(s) to use. Follow the product's instructions when applying plant food.

With flowering plants, cut off ("deadhead") any fading flowers to encourage fresh ones.
